Harvest Amber Ale by Wabash Brewing Company - IMG_5351.jpg

Wow! Look at the size of the head on that thing! It literally took me three or four minutes to pour this brew, having to wait for it to settle down. Plenty of carbonation in this brew! The color? Amber. It's cloudy to boot. The bouquet is malty, but only in a slightly roasted sense. Not heavy at all. Hints of caramel and citrus. The taste is crisp and light. You'd expect that from this much carbonation, but it still seemed to surprise me how light this beer was. Even though it was light in taste, it had a medium body feel across the tongue, with a somewhat bitter aftertaste, but only slightly so. Minimal lacing. Not being at all impressed with the Wabash Wheat I tried earlier, I wasn't sure I'd like this brew. I do. I really do.

Alpha King Pale Ale by Three Floyds

Large head on the pour that settles somewhat quickly. Brown/Copper in color and cloudy in texture, it stay as such throughout the session. Bouquet leaves no mistake that you are dealing with quite a bit of hops here, and yet it is not too overbearing. It is even "inviting" in a way, even. The taste is malty. Very malty by pale ale standards and the bitterness is quite evident. Just a hint of citrus to try to balance the malt and hops... This brew is very drinkable. The kind of drinkable that can get you in trouble. I finished the beer wishing I could have just one more taste to try to figure out some of the complexities in it's taste. The lacing is hardly worth mentioning. I admit that I am having trouble pinning this one down, as far as my thoughts on it. There's a lot to try to figure out here. I guess I'll just have to try again some day.... P.S. My lead guitarist was not impressed the last time we went out and he had this. It was too hoppy for him, but to each his own...

Hazy Days Wheat Ale by Wabash

Average head, blonde in color and only slightly cloudy, this ale hits the nose with a "citrusy/clove/honey" combo. Easily drinkable, but not nearly as "refreshing" as one might think on the pour. The "body" is just not there. Just doesn't seem to hold it's own...

Pours with a large head that settles quickly, the bottle says "slight haze in the bottle is yeast added for bottle conditioning." That being said, I can see the next town over through the glass, no haze at all. First hit on the nose, is that "peaches, maybe lemons?" My "Don't fruit the beer" friends would flip.. As far as taste, it matches the nose. This beer is definitely a "thirst quencher." It's gone before you know it. It's the kind of beer that you could start drinking, and then wonder where the heck the rest of the six-pack went. Trace lacing left in the glass. I might have to get a few more of these, before I make my final decision.....

Medium head on the pour. Color looks just like honey. I'm not kidding, think honey in your head, and that is it. Just a little cloudy. Bouquet hints strongly of citrus. Immediately reminds you of lemonade on a hot summer's day at Grandma's. Tastes the same. Light, crisp, refreshing. I'm thinking about filling a cooler full of this the next time we do a summer gig out in the hot sun. I hate to use the phrase "lawnmower beer" but this would be an excellent way to sit back and chill after a hard day's work. (Like I'd know what that is.....) Plenty of carbonation, and a clean crisp taste makes sure this brew crosses the finish line in first place!

Dirty Helen Brown Ale by Barley Island

Monstrous head on the pour. Looks quite creamy. Settles slowly leaving plenty of lacing behind. Scent of roasted malts hits the nose right away. Can't seem to get by it. No hint of fruit or honey or clove or anything that I can tell. Maybe caramel or nuts.. Dark brown in color, (no surprise there, I would think) although plenty of light gets through when held up. Texture hits the tongue as very creamy, although it is quite fleeting. Taste? A bit nutty and the roasted malts seem to increase in bitterness as it sits on the tongue. The aftertaste lingers. It will not go away. Maybe it's just me, but I just can't get by "hmmmm...it's OK." I've heard that others review it much better, but I'm just not feeling it. It's not bad, just not as good as I expected upon hearing about it from friends....

A huge frothy head, that I'm sure would have been there five minutes later, had I let it sit that long. (Watching the head collapse reminded me of the Guiness commercials that have hit the TV lately, thousands of teeny bubble fighting valiantly to reach the top) Color? What color? This beer is dark. Dark. Dark. Dark. What little light that gets through consideres itself lucky to be alive. The look reminds me of the four shots of espresso I have each morning... Bouquet only hints at what is to be tasted. Going in for the taste, I expected this beer to be very heavy. I was wrong. It has a very medium body, especially for a porter. Once again, back to the espresso, I'm getting a "burnt" taste in my mouth, but it's not a bad "burnt." Must be the "roasted malts." I've had good porters, and I've had bad porters. This is a good one, but you have to like porters to enjoy it.....

On the pour one gets a small head which quickley settles into the tiniest of rings around the glass. Nothing more. Hoppy and citrus seems to be the theme for the night. I have to admit that this brew is the best balanced of all the IPAs that I've had tonight. The slight mustiness and the bright citrus/spice/pine play off of each other very well. The taste is just like the smell, and the carbonation that is so very present in the immediate taste disappears quickly. Leaves behind a watery feel, which is not at all expected. I'm torn. I wish I had partaken of this one first because I think my tastebuds may have been influenced by earlier sessions. I may have to try this one all by it's lonesome.....

Medium head on the pour that settles quickly. The color is an orange/yellow that is not all that noteworthy. A slight cloudiness that stays throughout the session. The smell is hoppy with plenty of lemon/orange zest. You can almost see them peeling the fruits for this. This brew tastes like it smells. Hoppy with plenty of citrus zest to go along with the hops. The aftertaste is almost exactly the same as the taste, except for a metallic twinge.. A minimal increase in bitterness as it sits. I was not impressed with the intitial Wabash offering in this 12er, (Wheat) but the Harvest Amber and this Pale Ale have piqued my interest. I might have to stop by the brewery and taste them in person. Anybody want to go along???

Where to start? I hate to say bad things about a beer but.... Head?.....ummmmmm....no. Bouquet. Minimal, slight citrus, almost smells spoiled... Taste. It's a watered down Killian's. That's the only way to describe it...don't know what else to say.. Moving on to the next one. Thankfully.

Straight on the pour, you notice the cloudiness of the brew and its light carbonation and smaller than usual head. Held up to the light, you can still see the tendrils of hops and they rise to the top. Nose in the glass, your sense of smell is assaulted by the hoppiness of the beer, not so much as to bloody the nose, but more than enough to get your attention. The bouquet does not translate to the taste in it's entireity, but that is not a bad thing, as it would be way too hoppy if it did. Goes down easy, leaving a light tracing along the way. I haven't figured out my "ranking method" yet, but this one is likely to be towards the top...

Medium headon the pour that settles quickly. The color is an off-copper yellow with just a hint of cloudiness. The bouquet? Uugh. Have you ever walked down into a musty basement? That is the first thought that hit my mind. It's either that or the smell of an old sweatsock that been in a locker too long. I wasn't going to even taste this brew. Man, the things I do for you all...... Believe it or not, the taste is (initially) not that bad if you can get past the aroma. Very hoppy. A light citrus taste, ummm, is that grapefruit? Yeah, tastes like grapefruit. Doesn't end well though. The bitterness sits on the tongue like a 450 lb walrus. Of the two Mishawaka contributions to this 12er, this is better than the Four Horsemen, but that is saying almost nothing......
